The term means different things to different people. Psychotherapy is a collaborative relationship based on sincere and honest dialogue. This interaction provides a supportive environment that allows you to talk openly with someone who’s objective and nonjudgmental. As a professional, the person who you talk to will have had years of education and training and will be licensed by State Boards as well as professional societies to provide you with this support. Psychotherapy focuses on mental well-being, and can help those experiencing anxiety, depression, emotional pain, lack of confidence, post-traumatic stress, and a myriad of other conditions. It is founded on developing a sense of trust between therapist and client, wherein the latter can explore without reservations the issues that she or he is experiencing. Working through these matters with the therapist enables the client to ultimately develop skills to manage and cope. It can facilitate the client’s journey towards having a sense of reconciliation with the past, and confidence to embrace the future.
I work to create a safe environment in which you will feel invited to think and talk about your feelings and experiences. This will happen over a number of sessions, and varies from person to person. No two therapy sessions will be the same. But in each and every one you can expect to be listened to without judgement or conclusions. You’ll be able to relate your experiences during the week to the feelings and emotions that resulted. With time you should hope to feel at ease in therapy and supported in your work to heal or overcome the issues that brought you. This will reflect back out into your daily life. One thing you shouldn’t expect is for me to tell you what you should do. Healing can only be successful if you find your solutions and determine the path to your well-being, but you will find the support in our sessions that you need to make this transition.
Persons are different in terms of the issues they carry, the goals they have, and their ability to take advantage of psychotherapy to aid them in their transition. We will define a treatment plan for you over the course of your first sessions, which will help to form an idea of the objectives you are trying to reach. Whether these concern improved relationships with others, more confidence, a sense of security that you currently don’t feel, less anxiety, or a multitude of other emotions and states, we will evaluate and reevaluate as we go through the therapeutic process. Sometimes therapy requires months and occasionally years before it is fully effective. There are small rewards along the way, and signs of improvement that can help you to remain positive and hopeful. That is not to say that there won’t be set-backs as well, which is part of the process. When you learn to deal with these difficult times during therapy, you prepare for the moment in the future when you will manage the same issues from the place of security and confidence for which you have always striven.
Mental health is important to living well. When we have an understanding of ourselves, or have reconciled with and come to closure of past trauma and unpleasant events, and generally feel strong and confident, our enjoyment of life is immensely improved. We are happier, have stronger relationships, and get more out of each day. Yet somehow we are conditioned by societal norms to think we shouldn’t pay for the support and care we need to heal from pain, trauma, loneliness, or other afflictions. People think “I should be strong” or “I should be able to do this on my own”. They might feel that anything else would show weakness and lack of resilience. I would suggest you instead think of psychotherapy as proactive, as you carving out a space for yourself in which you can concentrate fully and completely on working through your issues, towards a better place of welfare and interior peace. An effective therapist is trained to help you work towards these goals, but must invest years of education and training to learn the methods and treatments that will be effective and beneficial to you. Professional psychotherapy has a value to you, and can enable you to move to the state of mind and emotional welfare you desire. Paying for your therapy allows you to find the right therapist who can support you through your transition to mental health.
